Abstract

The contents of Parts I and II, published 14 years ago, are briefly reviewed. Development of knowledge and procedures for the control of major hazard incidents, plus some significant lessons during the intervening period, are discussed. Trends in legislation are summarised and consideration is given to the concept of environmental, transport, and off-shore major hazards. Quantitative hazard and risk assessment techniques are referred to. The purpose of the paper is to contribute through the journal to the ongoing debate on Major Hazards; it is not intended to be a criticism of progress that has been made to-date, or of work in hand. Illustrative cameo case histories are included to relate theory and practice.
