Abstract

Product marking provides indispensable information for the purchaser and the user when choosing or using specific products. This is particularly true for personal protective equipment where the marking must clearly indicate the nature, extent and limits of the protective function the PPE offers so that the user can be certain to choose and use the right equipment for each requirement. There are large variations between the requirements for PPE-marking laid down in different European standards. No systematic approach at all can be found in this context; confusion which might negatively affect safety is likely to occur.Actual marking systems in European standards are presented and several suggestions for a new harmonized marking system are made.
