Abstract

The 1987 paper by Gilchrist and Mills on modelling the impact of industrial helmets is reexamined. The impetus that it gave to the development of better designs of helmets and to improvements to standards are discussed. It lead to a better understanding of the roles of the components of the helmets and later to better methods of measuring the dynamic response of these components.
