Abstract

Major crowd catastrophes that have occurred in the United Kingdom are reviewed. The disasters that occurred at Sunderland (1883, 183 fatalities), London (1943, 173 fatalities), Bolton (1946, 33 fatalities), Glasgow (1971, 66 fatalities) and Sheffield (1989, 96 fatalities) are referred to in detail. The common threads that lead to crowd accidents, inadequate planning, excited crowd, lack of crowd management and a flaw or hazard in a facility are clearly demonstrated.
