Abstract

A vocational rehabilitation program was organized to improve the functional capacity and mental well-being of unemployed workers with musculoskeletal disorders. The objective of the program was to offer the subjects a transitional period from inactivity to activity, from the orientation of illness and disablement to courage to live (through a new vocation, for instance). The program was made up of training days, self-learning projects, and work trials. The main contents were the promotion of health, physical exercise, ergonomics, and life planning. The vocational ability of the participants improved so that about half of the participants were in vocational training or were working six months after the program.
