Abstract

A fume cupboard is a partial enclosure and as such a certain amount of leakage will take place from its face opening. The presence of an operator at the cupboard face will affect its containment performance, but national standards vary in their requirements in this respect. In addition to the blockage effect there is the perhaps more important thermal effect. The variations of these effects with face velocity are investigated for two- and three-dimensional heated and unheated manikins, and comparisons are made with a human operator. The question of the role of an operator or manikin at the face of a fume cupboard during containment testing assumes a greater significance as we move forward in the development of a European Standard. Effects of movements past the face of a cupboard and of the raising and lowering of the sash are also reported upon.
