Abstract

A questionnaire for preventative safety diagnosis of work systems, by means of which constellations of conditions conducive to hazards can be perceived, is being developed. The questionnaire consists of 250 items as well as interpretation aids, which can supply safety advisers in a factory with indicators of key problem areas in which unsafe working conditions are likely to develop. Suggestions for measures which can be taken to eliminate hazardous constellations of conditions in a factory are being developed.Features of the work task, the work surroundings and the worker, all regarded as potential accident-causing conditions, are being studied. We attach special meaning to cognitive psychological requirements in hazardous situations as previous studies indicate that work sites with higher accident rates require a higher level of cognitive activity than do work sites with lower accident rates. Using individual case studies we intend to demonstrate how various components of the cognition process interact.
