Abstract

Hubbard, R.K.B. and Neil, J.T., 1986. Major-minor accident ratios in the construction industry. Journal of Occupational Accidents, 7: 225-237.This is the second of two papers analysing data on accident rates and ratios, mainly using data from the Thames Barrier construction site. Previous studies of accident ratios are reviewed. Of the 5000 accidents which resulted in injuries which were recorded at the Thames Barrier site between 1980 and 1982, only 152 (3%) of the total resulted in a major injury. Hence, for every one major accident there were 32 minor ones. Data from other construction sites are examined to help assess the wider applicability of the Thames Barrier data to the construction industry. A concluding section discusses the relevance for safety professionals in the construction industry of the findings described in this paper and the first one which was concerned with analysing accident trends. Further research using the Thames Barrier data is also outlined.
