Abstract

Leplat, J., 1984. Occupational accident research and systems approach. Journal of Occupational Accidents, 6: 77-89.Effects of the use of the systems approach in accident research are discussed. Any accident may be analyzed in terms of a variety of systems and it is therefore always necessary to specify the nature and the interrelations of the systems to be studied.Four types of research based on the systems approach are presented. They fall within the framework of: (1) Accidents as the expression of systems dysfunctioning; identification of the classes of dysfunctionings. (2) Relationship between the accident and other indicators of dysfunctionings. (3) Accidents and system changes. (4) Systems of reference of accidents in individual appreciation. The possible contribution of systems analysis to furthering advances in the field of accident research are assessed.
