Abstract

In a brief presentation of the general framework emphasis is placed on the concept of the accident (incident and error) in terms of a symptom of system malfunctioning (man-machine or sociotechnical system). Two types of analysis are then reviewed. The first attempts to anticipate the consequences of risk factors on the basis of the knowledge of system functioning; the difficulties of such an approach are underlined, especially when man intervenes in the system. With the second type of analysis, it is shown that under certain conditions a rudimentary model of system functioning may provide useful information on risks. A method devised for this purpose is briefly reported; its modes of application and its possible uses are outlined.
