Abstract

The factors that affect the breakage of window glass by explosions are discussed and the experimentally determined breakage pressures published in the open literature are reviewed. A model for predicting window breakage pressures, based upon large deflection plate theory, has been developed which gives reasonable agreement with the published experimental values. The model has also been used to obtain a rough estimate of the minimum flame velocity required in an unconfined vapour cloud explosion to produce an overpressure sufficient to break windows at a given distance from the explosion centre.
