Abstract

In a working environment there are many mechanisms that can cause a person to become electrostatically charged and this can be particularly hazardous for those who work in industries, such as resin manufacturing, where large quantities of highly flammable liquids are used. One method of minimizing the risk is to provide the workforce with antistatic footwear. In order to be effective, however, the floors in the work area must be sufficiently conducting and the footwear must remain antistatic when exposed to the many solvents and other contaminants commonly found in such environments. This paper describes the results of tests that were carried out in the resin manufacturing industry in order to assess the suitability for use in that industry of a number of different types of antistatic footwear. The tests included measurement of floor resistance, variation of sole resistance with wear and assessment of some of the other factors associated with the footwear that were considered relevant to safety.
