Abstract

A new simple model for the analysis of work accidents of benefit in accident prevention is presented. In the system-based model a work accident is considered as a state of disturbance in an organized dynamic system of man and his technical environment. The injury revealing that system state occurs as a result of the uncontrolled contact of a person and an injuring factor. The model divides the analysing operation into two main branches. One investigates the build-up and presence of the injuring energy in the system and special factors influencing these, and the other investigates in chronological order the action of the person injured in the accident and the factors influencing his acting so. The model has been applied to the investigation of accidents at stationary production grinding machines in the Finnish metal industry by analysing accident reports. On the basis of experience obtained so far, the model is considered to be useful for systematizing the investigation and analysis of work accidents in industry and suitable for further development.
