Abstract

Results of the study show findings in categories of question, including: influences of family, churches, and gangs; criminal and drug experiences, including those of friends; recruitment methods used by gangs; social and monetary assistance from gangs; religious affiliations, sexual assault incidents, experiences with bullying, ethnicity, criminal justice history, and characteristics of school experiences. Information presented in this study includes: definition of gangs, prior research on gangs, history of prison gangs, joining and leaving a gang, proliferation of prison gangs, street gangs, and an extensive summary of descriptive findings on member characteristics of criminal prison gangs. Data were collected from 159 validated survey respondents who lived at the Frank Lee Alabama Work Release Institution in Elmore County, AL.
