Abstract

This paper gives an overview for the 112th U.S. Congress to pass anti-gang legislation. The author discusses the problem of gang denial in some jurisdictions. The paper reports that gang violence is an issue in larger cities but is not on the minds of policymakers in Washington, DC. Several recommendations are offered for ways to curb gang violence they include: hiring gang specialist police officers, creating new gang task forces, and collecting State and county level gang intelligence. The author argues that murders by gang members who face the death penalty will not turn the tide. The author reviews other legislative bills for programs to help with the problem of gang violence and offers additional recommendations.
