Abstract

This paper is a summary of the latest principles, guidelines, and resources in the United States for effective variable message sign message design and display to enhance highway safety and operational efficiency. It also addresses some of the issues and recommendations for new chapters on variable message signs (VMSs) for inclusion into the U.S. Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
