Abstract

The paper presents the system of long-term speed surveys, which provides the possibility to observe the changes. The second part of the paper presents the most important results of speed surveys conducted in Poland in the range of: (1) influence of road cross-section type and road environment on drivers speed choice; (2) speed variability in time; (3) speed on villages through roads and speed reduction possibilities; and (4) change of drivers behaviors after speed limit reduction from 60 to 50 km/h in built-up areas. The conclusion contains general recommendation for speed management, resulting from the speed surveys conducted so far. Those recommendations are included in the National Road Safety Program GAMBIT 2005.
