Abstract

Child Welfare agencies in Etobicoke, a suburban borough of Toronto, Canada, collaborated to provide a therapeutic group program to service some unmet needs of eight abuse prone mothers and their preschool children. The overall goal of the program was to reduce the incidence of abuse or reabuse by decreasing the social isolation of the mothers and increasing their ability to communicate appropriately to get help for themselves and for their children. Each aspect of the program was designed to be nurturing and provide maximum opportunity for the mothers to express themselves affectively and learn from experiences. Three instruments were administered before and after the program. The converging validity of one statistically significant finding and trends in a positive direction for the others indicated success of the program. Furthermore, no mother was (re) abusive to her child. The program is currently being offered to a second client group and further research is proceeding with refined instrumentation.
