Abstract

Chloral hydrate is an old psychotropic agent that has never been adequately assessed in the clinical setting. Its continued use in paediatric units in a single dose for premedication before painful examinations or care procedures may be justified. Apart from this use, repeated chloral hydrate administration for sedative or hypnotic purposes is not supported by studies in children or adults.
