Abstract

Discusses several misconceptions about behavior therapy. A number of current issues regarding constitutional rights are described as they relate to the practice of behavior therapy: the issue of absolute vs contingent rights, the selection of legitimate goals for behavior change in institutions, the right to treatment, and consent to treatment and research. It is argued that behavior therapy can contribute significantly to the preservation of civil liberties through the generation of knowledge about how behavior is developed, maintained and changed.
