Abstract

In order to investigate the relationship between demographical or socioeconomic factors and suicide mortality rates by a popuration-based ecological sutudy in Yamanashi prefecture. The high ratio of elderly people to the total population, especially high ratio of elderly people living alone, and low mean number of households are extracted as possible demographical factors relating higher suicide mortality. The high rate of managerial employee, high rate of recipients of livelihood protection, and low family income are extracted as occupational or economic factors. Unemployment rate, though this showed a weak positive correlation, is also related to suicide mortality rate. The high rate of estimated patients with mental disorders such as depression, and the frequent mental health consultation for elderly enforced as administrative services are extracted as health factors. From these results, elderly people who are alone or unaided, or people who are in low socioeconomic status are thought to be a predominant target for suicide prevention measures in Yamanashi prefecture.
