Abstract

Bullying is very much an aspect of contemporary society and perhaps it always has been. Many may have experienced it from early childhood while at school, either as victims or perpetrators. The healthcare industry is, sadly, not immune from this phenomenon. This short article seeks to answer the question: 'Is bullying deliberately used as a management tool within the healthcare industry?' Although bullies exist in many healthcare environments, and there may be a culture of bullying in some of these work places, the proposition that some people actually use bullying as a management tool is more difficult to prove.
