Abstract

There are in the literature a number of relations for the reliability of a single-channel trip system. These relations give the rate of realisation of plant hazard, or plant hazard rate, or the fractional dead time. They are, however, approximate relations which become inadequate at more extreme values of the parameters proof test interval, trip failure rate and plant demand rate. An exact relation is given for the probability of realisation of plant hazard and it is shown that this relation implies that strictly, if the failure rate and the demand rate are constant, the plant hazard rate and the fractional dead time are not constant. The extension to multi-channel systems is indicated in outline.
