Abstract

In hazard analysis we identify hazards, estimate the probability of occurrence and the consequences and then compare them with a standard or criterion in order to decide whether or not action to reduce the probability or protect people from the consequences is desirable.

This paper reviews some of the criteria that have been suggested. Some consider the risk to individuals whilst others are more concerned with the impact on society as a whole.
