Abstract

Carbon monoxide poisoning may be either accidental or deliberate. The principles of treatment are rapid removal from source and treatment with oxygen at high flow rates. The precise role of hyperbaric oxygen in treatment remains controversial. Myocardial ischaemia, and permanent brain injury are potential outcomes. The relationship between exposures not causing unconsciousness and chronic effects is much more controversial.
