Abstract

Statistical performance of yield point in soft welding (50% Pb-Sn) as well as yield point and fracture in hard welding (E6011 and E6013) were studied using the statistical mechanics of fracture. The functions establishing a relationship between the cumulative probability of yield point F(σ) and the specific risk of yield point function ø(σ) were obtained. For the states of traction, compression and shearing the parameters m and σ0 were determined when the function φ(σ) is potential, and in those cases where φ(σ) is unknown integral equations were solved. The diagrams of cumulative probability of yield point and fracture were plotted as a function of yield point and fracture stresses, respectively, analysing moreover the influence of welded-joint size. Soft welding showed a volume influence predicted by Weibull's statistics, while hard welding did not show such a behaviour owing to some microstructural change due to volume change in test specimens.
