Abstract

A series of 13 experiments was carried out in an investigation of the relation between body sway and vision. Elimination of vision by closing the eyes or by complete darkness produced an average increase in sway of about 100%. When the Ss wore distorting lenses (+5 diopters) or were tested under low illumination, smaller but significant increases in sway were obtained. Small increases were obtained when the Ss observed moving objects. The observation of a swinging pendulum produced a marked increase, particularly in lateral sway.
