Abstract

We evaluated oral midazolam as a conscious sedative for children requiring sexual abuse examinations. Thirty-five of 338 children (mean age 49.4 months) received 0.5 mg/kg of midazolam. Midazolam produced adequate sedation in 31 children. Vital signs and oxygen saturation did not vary from baseline during or after the procedure. Oral midazolam appears to be safe and effective for pediatric sexual abuse examinations.
