Abstract

While athletic pursuits and exercise are intended to yield the physical rewards of endurance and muscular strength, abuse and overuse can result in musculoskeletal breakdown. The specific location and severity of an athletic injury depend on the activity or exercise, the age of the patient, and the enthusiasm and determination of the athlete. The denial of pain can result in chronic disability, extensive surgical repair, and eventual degenerative arthritis.
