Abstract

The objective of the Starting Out Safely program for children under age 6 is to provide, via their parents'/carers' modelling, supervision and training, and later, through centre-based reinforcement activities, increased opportunities for them to develop, practise and use road safety skills and strategies when travelling (supervised) as a pedestrian, passenger or when playing and for them to develop/increase awareness of danger at the roadside and improve their self-control. This paper describes the findings of the baseline study undertaken in 2002 to determine parents'/carers' attitudes to their roles as models of good road safety behaviour, the level and kind of supervision they exercise when in the car and in the street, and the actions they take to assist their young children to develop road safety skills prior to the implementation of the Starting Out Safely program.
