Abstract

The RTA has compiled a database which contains road attribute, crash and traffic volume data for 17,000 kilometres of the NSW rural road network. The database enables the automated calculation of average crash rates for any user-defined road stereotype. It also enables the calculation of crash rates for selected road sections for comparison with these average rates. Ideally, the calculation of average crash rates for a road stereotype should be based on a reasonably large sample size with little variability in the individual crash rates. This paper provides an overview of the Rural Road Crash Rates project, the development of the database and how this can be used in the programming of road infrastructure, traffic and road safety projects.
