Abstract

The research has been conducted in rural areas of New South Wales, specifically in Tumut, Tumbarumba, Gundagai, and Goulburn. The first three places are in the Riverina, and are areas mainly supported by rural industries. Goulburn is much larger as a town, and adjacent to the Hume Highway, but again in a mainly agricultural area. The research was with those in the community who are most likely to be involved in a crash, that is young rural drivers. A cross section of more mature drivers were also questioned to gauge a comparison in their attitudes to risk and driving. The research involved a number of focus groups, followed by extensive surveying, mainly to clarify the findings from the focus groups, and also to define more clearly the age group in which the risk taking behaviours were more prevalent.
