Abstract

The Australian TAC SafeCar project is one of a growing number of on-road studies concerned with evaluating the potential safety benefits of in-vehicle intelligent transport systems (ITS). Four ITS technologies have been fitted to each of 15 Ford passenger cars: Intelligent Speed Adaptation; Following Distance Warning; Seat Belt Reminder; and Reverse Collision Warning. Thirty drivers are serving as participants in the study. Each driver's task is to drive one of the 15 test vehicles over a distance of at least 16,500 kilometres. The purpose of the current paper is to describe the tools being used to measure driver attitudes and acceptance of the technologies under study and the mental workload associated with driving while interacting with the technologies.
