Abstract

To ensure money is invested wisely on dual carriageways, there needs to be a better understanding of how sealed shoulder widths and traffic volumes relate to road safety. This study seeks to identify the effect on crashes and crash type that may result from varying widths of shoulder seal on dual carriageways and to determine the optimal sealed shoulder width on these roads. To date a literature review of international practices, consultation with Austroads member authorities and preliminary work on the crash analysis has been undertaken. The crash analysis component is yet to be completed. Ultimately, the findings of this study will provide a reference to road managers on the provision of cost effective sealed shoulders on dual carriageways.
