Abstract

The views of Clive Stafford Smith, legal director of Reprieve, a UK charity fighting for people facing the capital punishment, on death penalty are discussed. He spent more than 20 years representing some 300 men, women, and children who faced capital punishment in various US states. According to him, there are more sensible approaches to the US murder epidemic than capital punishment. His African-American, juvenile, mentally disabled client, Ryan Mattews, was recently exonerated from death row by six DNA tests.
