Abstract

We describe a methodology that integrates Cognitive System Engineering (CSE) and system development processes. The methodology is designed to result in a tight integration of CSE into the overall system development process; in contrast to other methods in which CSE is treated as a separate, but directive, activity of system development. The centerpiece of our methodology is the development of executable requirements. This involves explicitly relating cognitive and perceptual work elements to system requirements, modeling the work needed to satisfy each requirement and then basing visualization concepts on these hybrid requirements. The methodology currently is being used to define a visualization system for assessment within Air and Space Operations Centers.
