Abstract

Results are presented of two investigations being carried out at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory into road accidents involving children; on the basis of these data some possible methods of protecting children are outlined.

The data indicate that children are injured less often in car accidents than adults and are safer in the rear seats than in the front.

Safety restraints designed to current British Standards for children are effective in reducing the number and severity of injuries to child car occupants.
Laboratory research to reduce child pedestrian injuries by vehicle redesign is described.
