Abstract

Although a hurricane is a force of nature, its particular destructiveness and the resulting human misery are enabled by specific human acts and particular social conditions. Hurricane Katrina challenges us to recognize that psychological healing is possible for the victims of a catastrophe but that their healing is contingent on material changes in the social world.
