Abstract

This issue contains an articley of unusual interest by the eminent English pediatrician and psychoanalyst, Dr. D. W. Winnicott. Winnicott for many years continued to function as pediatrician and psychoanalyst, enabling him to be in contact with a wide range of human experience centered on the child and his family. Such highly useful and creative concepts as "The ordinary devoted mother," "Transitional objects," "The capacity to be alone," are but a few examples of Winnicott's refreshing originality, invariably based on observations made while diagnosing and treating children and in connection with guiding parents to satisfying and confident parenthood. In his volume of collected papers, Through Pediatrics to Psychoanalysis, Winnicott wrote in the preface, "My clinical experience has been varied."
