Abstract

Based on three years of ethnographic fieldwork conducted in an agency that provides services to formerly incarcerated individuals, it is argued that the ways that formerly incarcerated men come to embody the interpersonal violence that structures the carceral habitus complicate the reintegration process. There is a dissociation between the embodied strategies and responses and the world which the formerly incarcerated person is attempting to navigate. Elements of the carceral habitus that are related to interpersonal violence are detailed along with the ways that the carceral habitus impacts the process of reintegration.
