Abstract

Dr. Gordis outlines the health consequences of alcohol consumption and the economic costs of alcohol abuse and alcoholism. He defines alcoholism and discusses alcoholism treatment and the problems inherent in its evaluation and financing. Dr. Gordis stresses the importance of rational alcoholism outcome research in future efforts to contain health care costs.
