Abstract

The aim of this literature review was to consider the effectiveness of thought-suppression as a therapeutic strategy. It is a commonly held belief that thought-suppression is counter-productive and results inevitably in experiencing the forbidden thought; however, sexual offenders frequently complete treatment programmes with the notion that 'I'll tell myself not to think like that' is a good strategy. This review explored the evidence for and against promoting thought-suppression as an effective strategy for managing risk.
