Abstract

AUTHOR'S ABSTRACT:
This qualitative study explored the issue of family violence and the effects that exposure to such violence has on a child's educational experience. The purpose of this study was to gain an insider's perspective of the ways in which the effects of family violence are brought into the classroom and in what manner they impact a child's capabilities and performance in school. A child who had been deemed abused and neglected by the local Juvenile Court was the primary focus of this study. This child was observed in his classroom for a period of eight to ten hours each week for the first half of the 1998-1999 academic year. Data were collected through participant observation, informal interviews and the collection of relevant artifacts. Data were also collected concerning the two siblings of this child through interviews and through the examination of their academic records. Data analysis was completed using the constant comparative method. Consistent of exposure with the existing literature, these children were found to have suffered effects to family violence in almost every area of their development--psychological, emotional social, and cognitive. Patterns within the data revealed that these effects manifest in the classroom and have a detrimental impact on school experience. A rise in absenteeism and an increase in behavior problems, for example, were found to correlate with events in the children's family. The data also indicate, however, that caring teachers and a supportive school environment can alleviate many of these ill effects. The findings presented in this report are limited by both the sample size and the methodology of this study. What this study does provide is a rarely seen look at the daily life of one child who has been exposed to family violence. Further exploration of this issue will add needed dimensions to the implications of such studies for our educational institutions.
