In this Feature we stated that Dan Markingson died by suicide on 7 May 2004, when his death was, in fact, on 8 May 2004 (BMJ 2013;347:f6039, doi:10.1136/bmj.f6039). We apologize for any upset this mistake may have caused. We also spelt the name of Professor Carl Elliott incorrectly.
