Abstract

What are the methodological challenges of enumerating the costs of the Niger Delta conflict? A preliminary literature review would quickly reveal that the Niger Delta conflict has been costly to the world, but the actual magnitude of these costs remains a subject of controversy. This paper relies on assessment of published literature and other media sources. The paper situates the discourse within the context of the Niger Delta and the concept of violent conflict. It further itemises the costs of the Niger Delta conflict, with statistical evidence, identifies the methodological challenges of enumeration of conflict costs, and suggests recommendations for better enumeration of conflict costs in the region. Finally, the paper reminds the researcher of the ethics of 'non-falsification of data'.
