Abstract

In this paper it is argued that secondary school counselors who deal in the area of personal problems are limited in their functioning by (a) the fact that their method is entirely verbal, and (b) the fact that they refuse to recognize the influence they have on others. It is suggested that counselors would be more effective if they influenced unashamedly and taught a psychology course. The purpose of the course would be to facilitate behavior change through field work, exposure to psychological literature, and supervised self-scrutiny. An attempt to develop such a course at the Newton High School is discussed.
