Abstract |
In the late 1970's, solvent abuse was considered a problem in Canada. The problem still exists today and is prevalent in various parts of the country, including Western Canada. Since products with abuse potential are available in retail outlets, a survey of retailers was conducted in 1979 to determine the extent of the retailers' awareness and perceived responsibilities. A 1996 study was undertaken to determine if there were any changes in knowledge and attitudes among the retailers in one of the communities previously surveyed. The study utilized 59 retail outlets. Retailers were found to be better informed and, like the general public, were found to be concerned that the problem has not decreased. Many felt a need for stringent guidelines and support in regulating the sale of the abused products. |
