Abstract

This paper discusses the relationship between psychological trauma and spirituality: how each affects the other and the overall impact on treatment. It attempts to understand how trauma and spirituality interact to positively or negatively affect the life of a trauma survivor. The influence of positive and negative religious coping is also explored. It examines the empirical literature and notes the inconsistent results concerning the relationship between trauma and spirituality/religion. The different roles clergy and mental health practitioners can play in trauma treatment are discussed.
