Abstract

Kindergarten children were both punished and rewarded for performing a motor response, with no specific alternative response available. Punishment given early in training partially suppressed behavior, while punishment introduced later was ineffective. These results, which contradict comparable animal data, are explained in terms of differential orientation to the stimulus situation for children and rats.
