Abstract

An area south of Phoenix, Arizona, is the scene of frequent and sudden dust storms that reduce visibility to zero and in the past two years have taken sixteen lives. Bids have beeen let on a system of 20 warning signs, with flashing strobe lights, actuated by anemometers, manual control, or photoelectric cells sensitive to sudden drops in visibility. The system can be actuated either partially or full. Other steps have been taken to reduce the hazard presented by the dust itself.
